Mitacs Umbrella Program – Program Process

  1. It is recommended that the potential applicants contact the CEMP through email (cemp@ualberta.ca) to confirm that their intended project is indeed within the scope of the target research areas and can be considered under the Umbrella Program.
    • In a situation where the intended project is determined to be outside of the scope of target research areas, the research team may elect to apply to the regular Mitacs Accelerate program without the need to obtain an approval from the CEMP.
  2. If the project is confirmed to be within the target research areas scope, the applicants should request that the program forms to be emailed to them from CEMP (cemp@ualberta.ca) or by connecting with the Mitacs Business Development Advisor, Sherifat Buhari (sbuhari@mitacs.ca).
  3. Applicants submit their completed application form to the CEMP for a technical review. The target time for review is 2 weeks or less. If the application is assessed to meet the UofA standards of research, the applicant will receive an email letter of support from the CEMP stating their application has been successfully reviewed. This email must be attached when the application is submitted for UofA institutional review.
    • In a situation where the application is declined by the CEMP, the applicant can update the application and resubmit or they may elect to apply to the regular Mitacs Accelerate program without the need to obtain an approval from the CEMP.
  4. Applicants complete and submit the Umbrella Program application for institutional review and signature through their Researcher Home Page. The email letter of support from the CEMP must be attached to the submission.
  5. The UofA Research Administrative Services (RAS) complete the institutional review and sign the proposal, which is returned to the PI for submission to the Mitacs Business Development Advisor by email (sbuhari@mitacs.ca).  Do not use the Mitacs Accelerate Registration and Applications Portal.
  6. Mitacs conducts their abbreviated process and the PI can expect a conditional approval within an average of 4 weeks from time of submission to Mitacs.
  7. Mitacs invoices the partner and once payment has been received by Mitacs, they issue the formal notice of award to the U of A and remits funds to UofA.
  8. RAS sets up the project in the UofA systems and provides funds to the PI.
  9. When the project is successfully completed, the PI will be asked to complete a short online survey to help with the reporting of the program outcomes. This will inform program adjustments going forward.
